Metis Day
We celebrated Manitoba's newest provincial holiday, Louis Reil day (see history here http://library2.usask.ca/northwest/background/riel.htm)
The Fort Dauphin Museum held a family day and we took our kids to see what life was like during the days of the fur trade. Metis is part of our heritage also so we have a close connection to this holiday.
They had many artifacts on display and games for the kids such as snowshoeing, tug of war and wood carrying time trials. The weather was beautiful with very warm temps and sun shine, snow taffy on a stick and beaver tails for snacks, very fun and educational day. The day wrapped up with a horse drawn wagon ride through town. Not as outdoorsish as we are used to but it was a gentle intro to many city kids who don't know a beaver fur from an alley cat.
