Manitoba, Canada Black Bear Hunting

Very Big Black bears with a consistent 40-50% opportunity on color phase. We see all the colors such as blonde, cinnamon and chocolate as well as different shades of black. Our bears get the chance to grow big with plentiful food and cover and no other bear hunters in our allocation. Some will die of old age as proven with our Annual Biological Sampling studies that gather information of the age of bears killed. We have age reports showing many in the teens and even up to 24yrs old, so our population is doing fine. Our hunts take place over baits, most of which are established for 20 years and the bears habitually take advantage of the fresh feed every spring and fall. We diligently keep the baits full and active. We spend the time to ensure our baits are active, with attention given to location, quality of bait, wind direction and concealment. We hunt from tree stands with shooting lanes cut to the baits with typical distance of 75 yards to bait for rifle. We use natural vegetation to build our stand blinds and our tree stands are custom built for ample room and Safety.

What makes us different? Mainly the area. This part of Manitoba is truly wild and there are no roads nor human establishments for many miles. We are not close to any population of people, nor is it easily accessible to get to the hunting areas. For this reason our hunts are naturally an adventure, whether we like it or not! The terrain, weather and seasons dictate how, when, why, where and who, is going on out there. Miles out on the big lake, way back inside the forest past 3 swamps and a salt flat or off one of the many islands. This and more could make up a day hunting at Riverside Lodge.

We do this fulltime, not on the side, it's our livelihood and we do it right. We employ great staff that along with us really enjoy the job. We all plan to be here for many years as we are granted and we want to be outfitting hunters in this pristine piece of Canada the whole time. We want all of our guests to want to come back.

Hunting pressure? Riverside Lodge guests are the only Bear hunters you will see. We have exclusive hunting rights to thousands of square miles of wilderness. The lack of human presence makes our hunting opportunities very unique and provides the hunter with a well deserved adventure. How many places offer a REAL wilderness hunt deep into the bears liar? It is a unique experience to hunt in our remote location and then haul your bear home in the front of a boat. It is not an easy task preparing/maintaining our bait sites and stands, but we put in a lot of effort to give each guest a hunt of a lifetime. Our equipment is also in very good condition and diligently maintained to ensure a Safe experience. With a fleet of 12 boats of all sizes and many types of off road vehicles, we always have a way to hunt.

We are all experienced professional guides who are very proud of our work. We know the area and the bears.

We accommodate rifle, shotgun, muzzle loader and archery hunters

Bow hunters : We ask that archery hunters take their time and place the arrow true of course, but also carry a rifle for protection. We have had close calls with angry bears which required a quick response from a loaded firearm.

Also,why not pack along a bow fishing set up for your rig? You can have a great time in-between hunts shooting Carp. They are found easily in the shallows and it is very fun and challenging. We have tons of carp and big ones too. They are not very good eating but you can add it to your bear bait.

What we don't have- black flies, nor no-seeums. Just mosquitoes,,,but lots of them. (Thermacell works great!)

Outcamps, tent camps have now opened, 2 new camps, Birch Island and Snake Lake. Birch Island hasn't been hunted in 6 yrs and Snake Lake hasn't in 10 yrs. The bears there are known monsters and the area is only accessible by boat, big boats and float planes. We hunt from a very comfortable tent camps in large outfitter tents with wood floors, walls and framed beds, a kitchen tent, outhouse, hot shower stall, generator for electricity, freezer for bear hides and plenty of fresh air in the real outdoors. We have an electric fence around the camp if some are worried about night time visiting bears. We travel to our baits by ATV and boat. Contact me for all the details if interested.

As a matter of fact, our Snake lake Camp boasts the 8^th biggest Black Bear in the World year 2000!!

Did you know Manitoba is one of the first and few places in North America that has kept records of collected samples from killed bears such as tooth and reproductive tracts for study. These are used for research to determine ages, sex, health and many more aspects of the bears. Much useful information is gathered from such studies but what it has proven is that by baiting bears we can maintain a very healthy population by selective harvesting. With the use of bait we are able to harvest certain bears with quick clean kills. It is also a very useful strategy to eliminate the accidental killing of a Sow with cubs. The hunter has plenty of time to observe the bear to determine if she has cubs around. Also by allowing such select harvest, most hunters take the time to kill big boars, which inevitably will kill cubs.
